Airlines / United States
American Airlines is an airline from the United States. Its codes are AA (IATA) and AAL (ICAO), and its radio callsign is “AMERICAN”.
History
American Airlines took the place of US Airways (until 2015).
What the codes mean
The two-character IATA code is the one on tickets, boarding passes and flight numbers (AA 123). The three-letter ICAO code is used in flight plans and by air traffic control. The radio callsign is what pilots and controllers say on the radio: a flight filed as AAL123 is called “AMERICAN one two three”.
